Paul F. Irwin, the quintessential nonprofit volunteer and benefactor, could be described as one in a million.brought more than $1 million into a variety of charities in Wichita Falls over some 40 years.
Mr Irwin served in the Army during World War II.
He is survived by his son, David, two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
His wife, Jane, whom he married July 31, 1941, died in 2007.
Two sons, William Sims and Walter Frank, also preceded him in death.
The former director of the Wichita Falls Housing Authority for 17 years, Irwin served in the University Kiwanis Club, where he had more than 63 years of perfect attendance.
He volunteered with the Boy Scouts even longer.
He began as a scoutmaster while still attending Texas A&M, the Times Record News reported in 2009, even though he himself had never been a Scout. He received the Silver Beaver, Whitney Young, Dan Beard, Dan West and God and Church awards.
The Paul Irwin Activity Center bears his name.
The YMCA, Southside Girls Club, Camp Fire, Backdoor Theatre and the Wichita Falls Symphony also have benefited from his involvement.
As a member of the Kiwanis Club, Irwin sold 1,500 pancake festival tickets two years in a row.
"I just asked them how many they wanted," Irwin told the newspaper. "Sometimes I just left them on somebody's desk and collected for them later. I had a few IOUs from people, so they owed me a good turn."”
A longtime member of the Faith Masonic Lodge, he is a charter member of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite and the York Rite Chapter.
He is a past colonel of the Maskat Temple and part of its clown unit.
"I've been blessed in so many ways," Irwin told the Times Record News. "A wonderful family, a fine city I've been privileged to serve, real friends from every walk of life. You couldn't ask for much more."”
